This website will explore how environmental issues affect prisons and the people around them. Evidence has shown that polluted air and water has affected inmates, guards, local residents, as well as local land. The prison industry has little regard to where its facilities are built; this has been an issue since a lot of facilities were built on toxic grounds. Evidence has also shown poor or insufficient ventilation, soil, food, waste, management, water, sanitation, and hygiene exposure to sunlight and open air, and population density which cause health issues to prisoners and staff. Researchers have made arguments on how environmental issues happen to low income, minority groups and how they can be inhumane to people in prison. These issues are important because they cause health problems among many people.
During this research I found key themes that included environmental racism, inhumane living environments/health issues, and prison labor.
